RAW compatibility update for OS X 10.8 adds support for a host of new cameras

Apple is currently pushing out a small, but not insignificant, RAW compatibility update for OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion that adds support for a whole host of new digital cameras in Aperture 3 and iPhoto. The update is necessary for both programs to make use of RAW image files from the newly supported digital cameras.

The full list of additions:

  • Canon EOS-1D C
  • Canon EOS Rebel SL1 / 100D / Kiss X7
  • Canon EOS Rebel T5i / 700D / Kiss X7i
  • Hasselblad Lunar
  • Nikon COOLPIX A
  • Nikon D7100
  • Nikon 1 J3
  • Nikon 1 S1
  • Sony Alpha NEX-3N

If you've got any of these cameras, head into the Mac App Store or hit the Software Update menu to download the update.

Google Chrome and Chromium add protection against malicious downloads

google chrome malicious download
Google Chrome already sports a number of security-minded features, from Incognito mode to a software sandbox which makes exploiting the browser a Herculean task. Now, Google has announced additional protection for Chromium and Chrome users.

Built upon the Safe Browsing API, the new feature introduces protection against malicious downloads. If a download link appears in the Safe Browsing blacklist, Chrome and Chromium will warn users against downloading -- a save button is still presented, of course, in case you're convinced a file is perfectly safe to download.

We'd like to see something a bit more eye-catching than the red warning icon -- like perhaps painting the entire bar red. Many of the people a feature like this aims to protect probably won't notice the icon or change in wording as they'll be focused on clicking the save button.

Google is initially making download protection available to Chrome dev channel users, and you'll likely see it in Canary and Chromium snapshot builds as well. After thorough testing, beta and stable users will be next in line.

Jetbus is a retro-tastic physics game, with a bus

jetbus
Once upon a time, there used to be a DOS game with a caveman and a human powered helicopter. The caveman would shuttle around the screen, madly trying to get customers to where they wanted to go.

Jetbus is not that game, but it's obviously inspired by it. You're driving a yellow school bus which has jets. I guess the jet engine takes quite a bit of space inside the bus, because you can only pick up one person at a time.

There are several doors on the screen, each with its own number. As you pick up a person, the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows you which number door you have to take them to.

You must fly your bus carefully, because if it gets bumped around too much, you lose. You earn money on each level, and can visit the garage to buy better jets and damping, power-ups, or even a whole new vehicle.

So while this game isn't made as well as the original that inspired it, it does provide a few minutes of fun. And now, which one of you guys remembers the original and feels like pointing to it in the comments?

Personal Activity Monitor tracks time you spend using desktop apps

personalactivitymonitor
Up until a couple of years ago, I used to turn to RescueTime to figure out how I spend my time online. Then it got too complex, and I stopped using it. Personal Activity Monitor is like a vastly dumbed-down version of RescueTime, and I mean that as a compliment. It's free and bare-bones -- all it does is track what applications you're using and for how long.

A big drawback at this point is that it doesn't integrate with Web browsers to help you analyze how you spend your time on the Web. Still, if your work doesn't require constant Web app use, knowing how long you've used a browser overall might be enough to help you manage your time.

This is far from the only application in this space -- alternatives such as Slife and Chrometa are full-featured and impressive -- but PAM is good option for those who want a nice, simple tracker.

Opera 11.10 gets HTML5 File API support, IMAP improvements

opera 11.10
The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera's built-in email client -- as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail -- such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

Update: The Opera 11.10 RC is now available, as pointed out by SlashZaku in the comments. Thanks!

Pinterest Embraces Its Porn Problem, Artistically

Pinterest Embraces Its Porn Problem, Artistically

A little over a year ago, everybody started freaking out about Pinterest's new porn problem. "Officially, there is no porn on Pinterest," Business Insider's Jim Edwards declared at the time. "But there is porn on Pinterest, and it appears to be a growing problem." Oh noes! There's porn on the Internet?!

Of course there is, and there's really nothing anybody can do to stop it. So Thursday, with nuanced fanfare Pinterest decided it wants to try and change its official no-porn policy and let people pin pics of boobs and things, so long as the images are, uhm, artistic. "Pinterest is about expressing your passions and people are passionate about art and that may include nudes," Pinterest told the Financial Times. "So we're going to try to accommodate that."

Good idea! Just like the insufferable trend of startups creating so-called Pinterests for everything under the sun, including more than one "Pinterest for Porn," this trend of people posting sexy shots and whatnot is not going to stop. Vine was the most recent major social media site to cope with its porn problem. Facebook employs hundreds of employees to pull down the dick pics users upload on a daily basis. Once you start digging into it, Tumblr is basically all porn — among other disturbing NSFW themes. And Twitter, well, Twitter's porn problem has ruined more than one political career.

With the exception of Tumblr who takes the laissez faire approach to porn (so long as there aren't any kiddies on there) many of these kinds of services have gone in the direction of moderation. Not Pinterest. They're going to "try to accommodate" the artistic smut. We're guessing the hardcore stuff will fall under Pinterest's current policy forbidding "nudity, partial nudity or pornography."

But what does that even mean? First of all, Pinterest spokesman Barry Schnitt told Gizmodo that the request actually came from the users:

Pinners have asked us for a policy on nudity that makes a distinction between works of art and things like pornography. A change like that poses a lot of questions. We're working our way through those questions but we don't have any additional details to offer just yet.

That said, Pinterest's making an attempt at accommodating arty nudie pics is not the same thing as actually allowing arty nudie pics. Second, how in the world are they going to draw the line between artistic porn and porny porn? Pictures of nipples with soft focus and raking light is okay but straight on pee-in-vee definitely gets yanked? Regardless of your definition of artistic, there's certainly some content on Pinterest that's straight up porn [NSFW obviously].

Google went through this whole art-versus-porn conundrum just a month or so ago, when the very provocative video for Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" got yanked in a hurry. While some argued that the naked dancing girls therein served as an artistic purpose, YouTube scrambled to justify the removal of the content. While the official policy states that anything "intended to be sexually provocative" will be taken down, the company assured its users that it wasn't banning nudity altogether but was leaving it up to moderators to apply the "I know it when I see it" rule. Gizmodo's own Peter Ha reports:

Once a video is flagged for nudity and/or sex and depending on the nature of the scenes involved, one of three things happens once the humans at YouTube have given it a look:

A) Nothing! The video stays up.
B) If the scenes in question are deemed artistic then YouTube puts an age gate in place.
C) If it crosses the line, then it gets taken down.

Again, it's unclear how Pinterest will draw the line. The vague quotes Pinterest offered to the press this week, however, feel more like marketing than anything, especially in the wake of the recent Yahoo!-Tumblr deal. "Hey guys," the site seems to be saying. "We're listening to you. If you're afraid of Yahoo! yanking your moody sex shots, just bring your photos over here and pretend it's art." Of course, in the age of the Instagram filter, the line is increasingly blurred—and blurry.

Samsung Lights a Match for New Innovation Trail

Samsung piqued media interest this week with an invitation to a June 20 event in London, where it is expected to unveil its latest Galaxy smartphones and tablets, along with new entrants in its ATIV lineup of Windows devices. What exactly the company has up its sleeve is speculation at this point. However, among the most likely possibilities for a London unveiling are a Galaxy S4 Mini smartphone, a convertible laptop, a Galaxy S4 Zoom camera -- or something completely different.

New iPad Smart Covers

new ipad smart coverAt the release of the iPad 2, Apple also brought out its Smart Cover product, which quickly became a favorite. Although the new iPad 3 is a little thicker through the middle than the iPad 2 (due to a bigger battery), it is still compatible with the previous Smart Covers that are currently for sale. This is excellent news as the Smart Cover not only protects the iPad screen from scratches and scrapes but is also functional and practical, and a stylish choice.

The Smart Cover uses magnets within the iPad to align it perfectly to the iPad. Third party cases can sometimes be a bit of a struggle to line up on the iPad – sometimes the case slips and the home button is not easily accessible, or it can be a struggle to fit the charger lead into the socket. So the magnetized Smart Cover is a welcome change.

The Smart Cover can automatically wake the device when the cover is opened, meaning users no longer need to hit the home button or power button to access the iPad. This is just a small and simple feature but incredibly useful.

The Smart Cover is also capable of supporting the iPad in a standing position so that you can easily view movies and videos. The cover simply folds behind the iPad to prop it up. This is also very useful for FaceTime and Skype sessions. The cover can also be folded at a different angle to prop up the unit to make typing easier. This can be especially helpful if you are composing a long email or document.

There are two material choices with the Smart Cover, and a whole range of colors to choose from. For bright vibrant colors, the obvious choice is the polyurethane cover, available in black, gray, pink, green and blue. There is also a traditional leather cover which comes in brown, black, gray, white and red. Both of the materials are lined with microfiber which works to remove smudges and fingermarks from the screen when the cover is closed, as well of course as keeping it safe from scratches.

No matter your personal preference in terms of color and material, the Smart Cover cannot be beaten on functionality and usefulness. Many cases for the iPad can be quite bulky and add a significant amount of weight and bulk to the device. However the Smart Cover is slim and sleek while still giving protection. In addition, the extra features make it a great and stylish choice for any new iPad owner, or a great gift choice for the iPad owner in your family!

Pastebin updated to V3, releases Windows app

pastebin
Pastebin is a very popular website aimed at coders and other nerdy types, which allows them (or should I say, us) to paste and share snippets of code with lovely syntax highlighting.

It has recently undergone a major overhaul which includes the release of a brand new Windows client. The new client lets you create new "pastes" and manage your existing ones. It joins a host of other tools from Pastebin, such as the Google and Chrome extensions, OS X widget and the mobile apps.

If you're currently using Pastebin, the new client is a great addition. And if you haven't tried it before, next time you have a piece of code you want to share or get some feedback on, you could do worse than try out Pastebin.

[Thanks, Jeroen!]

Did a Sonar Image Finally Find Amelia Earhart's Plane?

Did a Sonar Image Finally Find Amelia Earhart's Plane?

It's been 76 years since Amelia Earhart disappeared and we're still trying to find her. Last year, a search team re-evaluated their findings and thought they might have discovered her wreckage. The same group has discovered more evidence on where her plane landed, citing the sonar image above. Have we found her at last?

The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) say that the sonar image above might reveal what remains of Earhart's plane. The image was captured off an uninhabited tropical island in the southwestern Pacific republic of Kiribati and show an "anomaly" at a depth of 600 feet in the waters. Discovery News writes:

According to TIGHAR researchers, the sonar image shows a strong return from a narrow object roughly 22 feet long oriented southwest/northeast on the slope near the base of an underwater cliff. Shadows indicate that the object is higher on the southwest (downhill side). A lesser return extends northeastward for about 131 feet.

There is no other sonar return like it in all of TIGHAR's data which means it's very possibly something man-made (i.e. an airplane) in an ocean of nature. Here's the full image of the sonar image from TIGHAR:

Did a Sonar Image Finally Find Amelia Earhart's Plane?

And a closer image detailing the "anomaly":

Did a Sonar Image Finally Find Amelia Earhart's Plane?

The anomaly is described as being "definitely not a rock" and shows "drag markings" meaning it hasn't reached its final resting place just yet (meaning it hasn't always been there). Even better, the anomaly in the sonar image seems to be the right size and shape of Earhart's Electra plane and fits with the debris field picture we saw last year.

Ric Gillespie, executive director of TIGHAR, says that the evidence they have found suggests that Earhart made a safe landing on the dry reef and sent distressed signals but never heard back, eventually living life as a castaway. TIGHAR theorizes that's because her plane was knocked off its landing gear on the reef and pushed into the ocean by waves before Navy search planes came to find her. The landing gear of Earhart's plane eventually sunk into the water too (as spotted by last year's debris field picture) and then the fuselage of the plane settled into the location of the anomaly as seen in the sonar image.

That's where the search for Amelia Earhart currently stands. In order to confirm it with absolute certainty, TIGHAR would need to send another expedition onto the island that Earhart landed on. That would cost around $3,000,000 but hey, we've waited 76 years for this. [Discovery News]

Leaked Windows 8.1 build points to the Start button's return

Leaked Windows 81 shots point show Start button, wallpaper on home screen

When we last got a peek at Windows 8.1 "Blue," most of the updates lurked under the surface: rumors of a Start button revival didn't pan out. Flash forward to Paul Thurrott's screenshots of a newer build, however, and it's a different story. The leaked code has the Start button once more occupying a spot on the desktop taskbar, with behavior reportedly like what we've seen with Stardock's Start 8 utility. More throwbacks also appear to be in store. Users can now transfer their desktop wallpaper to the Start screen, and the storied boot-to-desktop option is available -- if turned off by default. Microsoft hasn't acknowledged the existence of these (or any) Windows 8.1 features, but the rapidly approaching Build conference suggests that we'll learn more in the near future.

webOS 3.0 beta now available to developers

hp touchpad webos 3.0
With the webOS 3.0 SDK available for almost two months, HP has now given developers access to a beta download of webOS 3.0 -- which powers the upcoming TouchPad and will likely ride along on HP desktops and laptops in the form of an emulator.

Right now, the webOS 3.0 beta is only available to Early Access developers. The crew at PreCentral states that HP appears to have eased up on access restrictions, however, so hopefully more devs will get on board and those of you who are planning to buy a TouchPad in the next couple months will have plenty of slick webOS 3.0 apps to install on your new tablet.

Samsung Desktop Dock with the Galaxy S4

Samsung Desktop Dock

One of our favorite features of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is that it's essentially the same size as its predecessor, and so a number of accessories released for the Galaxy S3 work with the newer version as well.

That brings us to what you see here -- the Samsung Multimedia Desktop Dock. It's a pretty basic deal -- plop your Galaxy S4 into it and it'll automatically switch to Desktop mode. Plug in with a microUSB cable and you'll charge the phone at the same time. And use the optional 3.5mm line out to play music while the phone's docked.

This thing's pretty portable as well, with the dock section flipping down into itself for easy travel. And perhaps most important, you can get it fairly cheap since technically it's "last year's" dock.

We've got a handful of pics after the break. Give 'em a gander.

EE makes up for network outage with free data

EE

Customers' data counters reset for holiday weekend

Good news for EE customers in the UK this weekend -- the operator has announced that by way of apology for network issues earlier this week, all customers will have their data counters reset to zero. That means however much of your monthly data allowance you'd used, it'll reset to zero this weekend, allowing you to use an extra portion of data before your monthly billing date.

We've confirmed that our own account's meter was reset to zero as of this morning, and it looks like the changes apply to data-only contracts as well as regular phone customers. In fact, the reset seems to apply to all EE customers, regardless of whether you were affected by the recent outage.
