Instapaper Developer Finds Possible Evidence of iPad Mini in Logs

Instapaper developer Marco Arment found signs that suggest two new iPad 2 models have been accessing his app — and it would make sense if they were in fact the rumored 7.85-inch iPad mini.

On Thursday, Arment observed “two curious entries” in Instapaper’s device stats: an iPad2,5 and an iPad2,6, device names he’d never seen pop up before. Although the device numbers could be spoofed by jailbroken devices, Arment thinks a more likely scenario is that these two devices are a Wi-Fi and GSM model of the iPad mini.

Devices with the names iPad2,1, iPad 2,2 and iPad2,3 were the original Wi-Fi, GSM and CDMA released in 2011. iPad2,4 is the cheaper and more efficient 16 GB Wi-Fi iPad 2 that was introduced with the launch of the third-generation iPad. These two new models could simply be the GSM and CDMA versions of the updated iPad 2, but with all the signs of an impending release of a smaller iPad, “a more likely explanation” is that these are the expected mids-sized iOS devices, Arment wrote on his blog.

The so-called iPad mini will reportedly function like a small iPad but look more like an oversized iPod touch. Reports suggest it will sport a 7.85-inch display with a 1024 × 768 resolution. Based on the iPad 2 naming in Instapaper’s device logs, it’d also look like it would sport iPad 2 internals like an A5 processor and 512MB of memory.
